Book Summary
The newly updated Daily Lesson Plans in the Teacher's Manual clearly state the objectives, tell what is needed to prepare for the lessons, and give clear directions on how to teach the concepts. The lesson plans include handwriting assignments that coordinate with the sounds and words the child has learned. The Teacher's Manual contains a special reference section that explains how to use the program. It also includes make-it, play it games, tactile learning activities, descriptions of daily routines, a scope and sequence, and a word list arranged by lessons. Two workbooks provide 175 daily activities for reinforcement of concepts taught in the lessons. Workbooks are wirebound so they can be folded flat. Because of the unique phonics method that allows students to begin reading early in the program, the kindergarten curriculum includes two sets of reading books for a total of thirty books. The First Step Readers are a set of 10 very short books. Comprised of only 4 pages, the child can read a whole book without being overwhelmed. The other twenty McRuffy Readers range from eight to fifteen pages. Each book coordinates with new concepts taught during the week, plus gives the child practice decoding words using sounds the child has already learned. The stories give children the opportunity to apply comprehension skills. On the back of each book, in both sets, is a word list for the book. Children can practice the words in isolation and then read them in context of the story. Cut apart Flashcards are included to be used for phonics drill and practice. The cards can be used in daily routines and playing learning games. The flash card set also includes short and long vowel charts, ahandwriting guide, and letter flash cards. Sliders and Wheels are hands-on word changing drills that reinforce certain phonics concepts. These are included in the workbook plus a second copy master is included in the Teacher's Manual. The Make-it, Play-it Games are a collection of 5 reproducible folder games included in the Teacher's Manual. Game titles are: Wiggle Worm, Reading Baseball, Ruffs Lunch, Go Bananas!, and The Fish Pond. These are provided as copy masters in the Teacher's Manual. The optional Handwriting Book comes in three styles: traditional, modern, or cursive. Although the lesson plans give a daily handwriting assignment that can be done on blank writing paper, the Handwriting books feature additional practice exercises and guidance arrows that show the formation of the letters. The handwriting book is made optional to help reduce the overall cost of the program.
