Book Summary
Higher education institutions in South Africa are facing the challenge of creating research partnerships with industry and contributing to the growth of a national system of innovation. Through detailed case studies, this monograph maps the scale and form of research networks and collaborative practices in three high-technology fields namely: information and communication technology; biotechnology; and new materials development. The case studies show how knowledge networks are shaped by the competitive dynamics of the industrial sub-sector within which they operate, the scientific and managerial expertise within higher education partner institutions, and how they are facilitated by government policy and intermediary partners.
